Social Media Marketing: The Facebook Illusion

Posted in Business

Let’s come clean, most small enterprises use Facebook as their primary form of marketing. Is it a handy marketing tool for small firms or are they caught up in the popularity contest of “I have more fans than you”? Are small firms convinced that because many millions of people use Facebook every day that its acclaim translates into a huge captivated audience prepared to buy their goods/services?

Let’s paint a picture:

– You are extremely active on Facebook, regularly posting content only to get 1 or 2 comments, insights and maybe a share or 2.
– You hope customers who need to acquire your products/services will find you rather than you spending time trying to attract customers thru Facebook.
– You want a consistent increase in Facebook fans, but your fan page reached its plateau. Now you find yourself entertaining the same circle of fans over and over again.

If this is this you, you could have been sucked in to the Facebook illusion forgetting why you have got a website in the first place. Facebook is a social engine, not a search engine.

Facebook’s tangible results feel great, but it’s not a long term, sustainable solution for serious entrepreneurs. It should really only be used to as a supplement your website. The great majority of people are on Facebook for one reason only to socialize. Ask yourself: “Is Facebook the first thing that comes to my mind when I am hunting for products and services?” Probably not. So why would your customers go to Facebook to find your business?

Do you need more customers without the trouble? Utilizing SEO will do the following for your business:

– Reduce your level of social media engagement leaving additional time for other work related duties
– Create a good flow of new customers who are really hunting for your products and services

If you do not trust me, take the Facebook challenge by doing the following:

Using Google’s Keyword Tool, enter your product or service (not your company name) in the word or phrase box

– Look at the results on the right under Local Monthly Searches
– Compare those figures to your Facebook numbers including fans, insights and shares
– Is your Facebook page producing higher figures each month?

Remember, the Local Monthly Searches are folks that are specifically hunting for your products! Ask yourself: “Is it worth investing a small amount for an SEO service or do I continue to wish traffic from Facebook will finally work out?” It’s your call.
